An Open Mind

“A mind is like a parachute; it doesn’t work unless it’s open.”

I’m sure you’ve heard that, and yes, it’s true, in a limited sort of way.

A parachute has lines that do more than just keep the parachute attached to the skydiver.

The lines keep the parachute from opening too far. They help it hold the shape it needs to hold air and slow the skydiver’s descent.

Without these lines, the parachute opens all the way and becomes just an oddly-shaped sheet, wafting on the breeze, high above the skydiver who was depending on it, as he or she plummets to their death.

I think this should be taken into account when considering the original simile.
